The situation,the most southern in the Iberian peninsula and an excellent weather
have made it be coveted by Tyrians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths or
Arabians from time immemorial. Apart from 200 km. of the finest golden sand in
the peninsula, there are other attractions.
"Sanlúcar de Barrameda" is a town sited next to "Guadalquivir"
river mouth. This is a natural bed at which important cultures and civilizations
have developed. They left lasting marks. It is located at an exceptional situation
opposite "Doñana" National Park. This is the most important
biological nature reserve in Spain and an ideal starting point for visitors
who want to enter this green space. Horse races are annually carried out along
"Bajo de Guía" popular beach.
"Chipiona" is an old summer tradition town and it was a seaside resort
at the end of the 20th century. At the enviroment,there are four wide beaches
with clear seawater rich in iodine.This beaches are "Regla", "La
Ballena", "Tres Piedras" and "Cruz del Mar". All of
them are equipped with tourist infrastructure.
In "Rota", town of origin going to Phoenician, Roman and Arabian
times back, you can admire "De Luna" Castle (13th century), Our Lady
of "la Expectación" Church (16th century)and "La Caridad"
and "San Roque" Baroque Churches.
Jerez, city worldly known for the wine and horses (venue for the equestrian
world championship 2002) is located at the interior area of the province, right
in the countryside. Besides, Jerez is communicated very well through a great
network of highways, railroad and airport.
This connects it with national and
international towns. Civilizations such as Phoenicians, Romans and Arabians
settled this town. In fact, the old central area was declared as a historical-artistic
monument. Jerez has the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and the permanent
speedway track at which international competitions take place.
"El Puerto de Santa María", town situated at the middle of
Cadiz Bay, has an extraordionary monumental and artistic heritage. In summer,the
most important attractions are beaches like "la Puntilla", "Valdelagrana"
and "Fuentebravía", among others. "Puerto Sherry",
one of the main marina in Spain, annually arranges the Nautical Week.
"Puerto Real", town essentially devoted to sea, has a significant
naval industry.
At the outskirts, it is worthwhile to visit "Las Canteras"
Park with Lourdes Virgin Cave. "San Fernando", popular town known
as "The Island", is like a low hill surrounded by salt marshes and
sea. The peculiar popular architecture makes a lot of use of worked iron at
windows and doors.
Cadiz, provincial capital is situated next to the bay it names. Just a spit
connects it to the continent. This three-thousand-year-old town is the oldest
one in Europe. It was founded by Phoenicians in 1,100 BC and it became the entrance
spot for cultures such as: Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths and Arabians.
"La Victoria", "Cortadura" and "La Caleta" Beaches
have had a great success from time immemorial.
"Chiclana", is sited at a wonderful enclave between salt marshes
and pine forest, just 9km. from the sea. Among the beaches, it enhances the
beauty of "La Barrosa" Beach and "Novo Sanctí-Petri"
tourist complex with small apartments, hotels, facilities for amusement and
leisure time and a modern golf course designed by "Severiano Ballesteros",excellent
Spanish golfer.
"Conil", typical village of fishermen with an old maritime tradition
has beaches composed of warm fine sand and with a length of 14 km.,like: "los
Bateles", "la Fontanilla", "Fuente del Callo" beaches
and "Roche" coves.
"Vejer" is a medieval village located on a hill closed to the sea.
It is made up of narrow steep streets surrounded by a wall. As a trace of old-style
customs of the Arabian world, you can see "las cobijadas", women dressed
with a black wollen cloth from head to foot. At the nearby coast, it lies "El
Palmar" Beach and Trafalgar Cape, at which it was carried out the famous
battle of the Franco-Spanish against the English naval fleet at the beginning
of the 19th century.
"Barbate" has even been an old fishing port since Roman times and
a bright white village with a special tourist interest grew up around the port.
It has wonderful beaches such as "Del Carmen", "Hierbabuena"
and, above all, "Caños de Meca"- with spectacular cliffs 100
m. high and fresh water springs."Santiago" Castle Ruins lie next to
the lighthouse.
"Zahara", population belonging to the local government of "Barbate",
is a picturesque locality with excellent hotels and heavenly beaches. Near "Zahara",
it is "Tarifa" - historical village at the most southern part of Europe.
It is separated 14 km. from Africa and it was the first Muslim settlement in
711. "Tarifa" is famous for the Spanish military man "Guzman
the Good"´s known heroic deed. He prefered to sacrifice his son rather
than surrender this garrison town. It still preserves the charm of an Arabian
town.
"Baelo Claudia" Roman Ruins next to "Bolonia" Beach are
worth mentioning. The coast - chosen as venue for windsurfing world championship
- has provided the village with a considerable activity. Many sportsmen play
underwater fishing at transparent waters of many beaches like "Los Lances",
"Bolonia", "Punta Paloma", "De la Plata", "Valdevaqueros"
and "Torre de la Peña".
