Since longer than two centuries, Jerez is famous for being one of the most important
craddles of Flamenco.
The universality of flamenco is unquestionable as recognized by the very best
qualified artists of this art and by good flamenco lovers. They define Jerez as
the most important spot of flamenco.
The Flamencology Cátedra was founded in 1.958 whereas the Andalusian
Flamenco Centre was recently founded with The Pemartin Palace as seat. This
palace is characterized for its valuable artistic elements such as a "Mudejar"
decoration and a stone-carved patio.
The main aims of this centre are:
Promotion of the traditional artistic, literary and musical values.
Investigation, recovery, teaching and disclosure of those values belonging to
the deepest Andalusian cultural tradition.
Conservation and collection of those documents and objects related to flamenco.
Each year, there are dance and guitar seminaries addressed to young people who
love flamenco. Apart from flamenco conference, an investigation prize for unpublished
works about flamenco is summoned each two years.
Each four years it is held an international conference.
Nowadays, Jerez keeps on enjoying the biggest international prestige as the
town of flamenco. The cafés existing at the beginning of the century
have been replaced by more than a dozen small flamenco clubs (peñas flamencas.
Those clubs gather together an important mass of flamenco lovers and they frequently
house concerts and recitals.
