| CARNIVALS - from 12th to 19 February 2010 |
Cadiz, also known as "Silver litte cup" is transfomed into a real festival
not only for the inhabitants of this city - completely delighted at one of the
most ludic events - but also for thousands of tourists who visit this Andalusian
city. The official starting signal for this great celebration takes place with
the opening speech traditionally carried out at "San Antonio" square.
The carnival is one of the most important festivals whose written evidence goes
indeed to the 18th century back. In those days, the most popular classes celebrated
some dances and parties the nobility and the Church did not approve of as they
contained no shame and lascivious elements. Nevertheless, it came a time both
institutions resigned themselves to this popular celebration up to the point it
became institutionalized. In the middle of Civil War, the national side forbade
any type of festival like carnival till 1949. At that year, this tradition was
recovered in a discreet way under the title:"Typical festival of the city".
The carnival entirely got back the splendor at the beginning of the democracy
in Spain.
