THE OLDEST WINERIES

Visiting historical “Pedro Domecq Wineries” is a unique experiences for several reasons:

Apart from being one of the eldest wineries which are known in this area, architectonical setting, building harmony, gardens, squares and courtyards invite us to take back in time. Thus, we go back into Romanticism of Jerez in the 18th century.
You begin the route by gaining access to the interior area of the winery through “Las Parras courtyard”.

Such a name is due to huge vines which protect from sun and heat as a natural cover. Besides, they color the space they frame and they revitalize it.
Now, you visit “San Pedro Winery”. It is a building belonging to the end of 18th century and in the past, it was called Fernando VII ´s Winery.

At the inner part, it was prepared a demonstration of winery tasks to the king. They cover grape treading, lining up barrels, and so on.
Itinerary goes on through “El Castillo Winery”. It is a historic place with a west facade running along the same line which occupied canvas of Arabian walls surrounding Jerez for medieval times.
No doubt, the most emotional point of the tour is “El Molino Winery”. It is the establishing enterprise building whose existence goes back into 16th century.

Its name is due to the old mill located at the same place at which winery was founded with one hundred wine barrels.

At this environment full of bouquets, history is evident. Time has given up passing. A glorious past and nobility are testified to by barrels and ancient wines, kings´ signatures, artists, writers, scientist, sportsmen and so on.

Here there are the most mature wines in Jerez. They are authentic rarities and vine-growing pieces of jewelries “Domecq” has conserved as irrefutable proof of both experience and knowledge transmitted from generation to generation.

At this matchless winery, we can find the first barrel of “Fundador brandy” from 1874, among other curiosities. This barrel was signed by Alfonso XIII in

1904 , on the occasion of his first visit to the enterprise.

“ De la luz Winery” is a building devoted to brandy maturity. At the middle of 19th century, “Fundador”

was created at the walls of this winery and it was also the first brandy in Spain to be marketed.

At the interior area, we can see an “Alquitara” or copper still. This is a machine in which wine is distilled in order to obtain “Holandas”. This substance is raw material for brandy production.

Last point of itinerary may be an element with the greatest architectonic value of the complex.:

Cloisters.

It is a courtyard surrounded at three sides by a cloister from 15th century. In its day, it belonged to Dominican Cloister of Holy Spirit. It was not only acquired but also restored by the winery for visitors to enjoy it.

At the end of the visit, visitors have a shop at their disposal at which they can acquire any wine and brandy of “Domecq”.

Besides, you can buy postcards, combined cases and different gifts specially designed for the enterprise.
